Pandemonium As Container with Chemicals Explode in Apapa
There was pandemonium around Berger Cement axis of Apapa yesterday when a 20foot container of chemical known as Carbide, belonging to CMA CGM shipping company exploded.
According to reports, the huge explosion was caused by a leakage in the container seal which apparently has been tampered with enroute.
Subsequently, the explosion led to heavy traffic gridlock on the already congested Apapa axis for several hours.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) swiftly activated its response plan and determined that the container was carrying oxyacetylene gas also known as Carbide.
The fire has been extinguished by the Agency’s firefighters and other First respondents.
Sources at the explosion scene said they discovered that a compromised seal device by the truck driver had led to gradual leakages which then ignited when the tyres burst.
The Respondents at the scene include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA fire unit, Lagos State Fire service, the Police, and members of NSCDC. The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Olufemi Oke Osanyitolu said the fire was eventually extinguished when it had caused the early and unexpected deaths of innocent people.
