Boat Accident in Lagos: NIWA Arrests Manager of ‘Only God Ferry’ for Non-Compliance with Operational Safety Regulations

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has arrested the manager of Only God Ferry, following a tragic boat accident on October 7, 2024, near Imore in Lagos.

The accident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., involved a fiber boat carrying 13 passengers, along with a deckhand and the captain, en route from Ebute Ero to Badagry. The vessel collided with a wooden boat that had just departed from the Imore jetty, leading to injuries and missing persons.

According to NIWA’s investigation, the fiber boat, owned by Only God Ferry, veered off its course, crashing into the wooden boat due to the obstructed vision of its captain, likely caused by the cargo onboard. The investigation further revealed that the ferry company violated several safety protocols, which contributed to the incident.

Of the 15 passengers believed to be aboard the wooden boat, 13 were rescued, though five sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment. Two passengers remain missing, with search efforts ongoing.

In response to the incident, NIWA arrested the manager of Only God Ferry for negligence and non-compliance with operational safety regulations. Authorities are also seeking the captain of the fiber boat, who may face additional charges.

NIWA’s Managing Director emphasized that the arrest is part of the agency’s effort to enforce safety standards on Nigeria’s waterways and prevent future tragedies. Legal proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
