The 5th edition of the Nationwide Virtual Marine and Blue Economy Quiz Competition begins today, with over 2,000 students from Senior Secondary School (SS1 and SS2) registering for the event.
However, only 1,000 participants will take part in the quiz, according to Mrs. Olaitan Williams, Founder and Convener of Ocean Ambassadors Foundation.
The quiz competition, aimed at encouraging young minds—especially the girl child—to consider careers in the maritime industry, is part of an ongoing advocacy for succession planning and sustainability. “This initiative ensures the maritime industry will not face a shortage of human manpower, particularly with the rise of the Blue Economy,” said Mrs. Williams.
The event will be declared open on October 9, 2024, by Barrister Yinka Oladunjoye, former Lagos State Commissioner of Education and currently the Federal Commissioner representing Lagos at the National Population Commission. Oladunjoye, a distinguished lawyer and insurance expert, is a passionate advocate for the empowerment of the girl child.
The quiz competition according to the convener, is a critical tool in fostering early interest in the maritime sector, ensuring future generations are equipped to sustain and grow Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
