MWUN Declines Participation in October 1st Nationwide Planned Protest

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has advised its members not to participate in the planned nationwide protest on October 1st, 2024, organized by unknown individuals.

In a statement issued on Monday, MWUN President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, emphasized that the Union only engages in industrial actions sanctioned by its recognized bodies, such as the Central Working Committee (CWC). He clarified that the upcoming protest was not called by the CWC or any affiliate of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and therefore, MWUN members are not obligated to join.

“As a Union comprising essential service providers and critical economic actors, our members are committed to delivering uninterrupted services,” Adeyanju said. He highlighted the dedication of MWUN members, referencing their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 lockdown despite restrictive measures.

Adeyanju further stated, “While the Union does not begrudge any Nigerian citizens their right to peacefully assemble and express themselves, MWUN and its members do not follow industrial action directives that do not come from the Union’s recognized organs, such as the Central Working Committee (CWC).”

Reaffirming the Union’s stance, he concluded, “The planned October 1st, 2024 protest is not called by the Union’s CWC, and we are therefore not obliged to participate.”
