BREAKING: Shippers Council Meets Port Stakeholders, Sets Terminal Charges Increment At 400%

The Nigerian Shippers Council on Tuesday convened a resolution meeting between terminal operators, shipping companies, freight forwarders and other relevant stakeholders over the recent increment in terminal storage charges which the Council had approved.
DAILY TREND gathered from sources at the meeting that, part of the resolution reached at meeting was that the Council has set the increment to about 400percent.
The resolutions according to reliable sources includes;
1) The number of free days for cargo storage at the terminals has been increased from 3 days to 5 days. This will provide more flexibility for shippers and reduce costs.
2) The previously proposed 600% increase in terminal charges has been reduced to 400%. This adjustment aims to strike a balance between the needs of the terminal operators and the shippers.
3) Break bulk cargo charges have been increased from 125% to 250%. This adjustment reflects the changing dynamics of the industry and ensures fair compensation for services provided.
4) All complaints regarding inefficiencies by the terminal operators will be addressed immediately. This commitment aims to improve overall operations and enhance customer satisfaction.
5) The Shippers Council has established a complaints desk at all ports. This dedicated desk will ensure that issues raised by stakeholders are resolved promptly and efficiently.
6) Boxes that arrived prior to October 16th will be rated with the old rates. This provision aims to avoid any confusion or discrepancies in billing.
7) Further discussions between the terminal operators and the Shippers Council will continue to refine and improve the processes. This ongoing dialogue will ensure that the interests of all parties are considered and addressed.
8) The above resolutions will take effect immediately. All parties involved have agreed to abide by these resolutions and work collaboratively until further notice.
By reaching these resolutions, the Nigerian Slippers Council, shipping companies, terminal operators, and relevant associations/stakeholders have demonstrated their commitment to fostering a harmonious working environment and addressing the concerns of the industry.

When and where was this meeting held
In my opinion this 400% increase in terminal charges is insensitive to the consumer purchasing power, business survival and economic growth. There are many other issues causing cargo clearance delay is not being looked at before this unfavourable decision. The Nigeria Shippers Council need to look at ways Customs officers cause delay through unnecessary queries and proffer solutions.
