The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has urged the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr Bashir Jamoh to speedily address the lack of valid identity cards for dockworkers.
The union pledged to work with the new  NIMASA boss and his team even as they lamented that the Dakuku Peterside administration was never sincere with the union.
President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju in an interaction with journalists on Tuesday noted that Dr Jamoh was part of the old management and that he knows the mistakes of the past executives.
According to him, the DG needs to correct some of these mistakes by working hand in hand with the seafarers and the dockworkers.
Adeyanju commended the DG for extending the validity of seafarers documents due to the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic.
“We have congratulated the new management and we have promised to work with them as we have been doing in the past, the former DG did not take the MWUN affiliate,  which is the seafarers branch seriously,  he did not carry them along, they were only busy making noise that they have trained almost 10,000 seafarers which I as the PG of the union is not even aware”
“But this present management , we believe they would do the right thing at the right time, we read it in the social media that they recently extended validation of seafarers certificates, this is a plus for the new management of NIMASA, if the former DG have been doing all these, nobody would raise any eyebrow against them”
“Actually we have not heard from them as a result of the lockdown, but we are telling the whole world that we would work with the new DG of NIMASA”
“Many issues confronting seafarers and dockworkers, Jamoh needs to be proactive in resolving them, especially the biometric identification cards” he said
The MWUN PG noted that his is the time the dockworkers need the biometric ID cards mostly because of the insecurity that is ravaging the whe country.
He said the ID cards that was given to the dockworkers has expired and there is no information about the bearers on the ID card, he urged the new NIMASA management to look into this and make some corrections.
