HAPPENING NOW: Dockworkers Protest Rocks Lagos Ports, As MWUN Election Approaches

Dockworkers under the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Monday 28th of April staged a peaceful protest at the Tin Can Island Port over the alleged interference of terminal operators in the forthcoming branch elections.

The protest kicked off at the Tin Can Port first gate progressed to the TICT second gate, Apapa Port gate and upward progression to the MWUN headquarters at Osho Drive, Olodi Apapa.

The palaccard displayed by the aggrieved dockworkers reads “We want to choose our leaders by ourselves “; “Tony Stay Away from our Union Election” “We want Justice and Equity ” among others.

The Dockworkers alleged that Tony Nted, a former President General of MWUN, was responsible for the brewing crisis in the coming union branch elections, adding that, he is trying to impose a candidate from ENL Terminal where the incumbent Branch president came from.

They believed the Dockworkers Branch leadership should be rotational in line with the union’s Constitution.

According to them, immediate past President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju had perfected the blue print for the coming branch elections to be peaceful, but that Tony Nted is being manipulated, allegedly to impose a candidate on the Dockworkers.
