After Bomodi’s Exit from Seme Customs, 25 Illegal Chekpoints Resurface Along Seme Border
There are indications that the number of illegal checkpoints along the Seme Border Expressway has increased again since the exit of the last Area Controller of the Seme Command of Customs, Timi Bomodi.
Bomodi is now an Assistant Comptroller General of Customs at the headquarters in Abuja while the command is now headed by Compt Kayode Kolade.
Due to complaints of multiple checkpoints and extortion along the Seme border corridor, Customs Service had in November 2023 initiated a joint patrol of the axis in collaboration with sister security agencies including Nigerian Police, Immigration and others.
All the agencies had agreed to a joint patrol which would help not only in combating smuggling, but to also deter unwholesome activities by persons that are supposed to be on side of law enforcement.
Speaking at the Western Zone Meeting of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) in Lagos last week, the Sole Administrator of the Seme Chapter, Clement Okpugie lamented that when Bomodi was in the saddle, the checkpoints reduced drastically.
He however lamented that the illegal checkpoints have now returned with a vengeance.
Clement also lamented inactivity at the borders, urging the Federal Government to fully open up the borders for trading activities.
“The problem we have at Seme border is lack of activities, since the closure of the border, majority of our colleagues who are agents are leaving from hand to mouth, and they cannot even boast of renewing their license.
“Another challenge we are having, is the proliferation of agencies on the road. Between Seme and Agbara, we have more than 25 checking points, both Customs, Police, DSS, NDLEA.
“The former Customs Area Controller, Timi Bomodi before he left, we had a meeting with him immediately I took over, he was able to listen to us and removed some of his men.
The officially approved checkpoints from Seme to Mile 2 is Gbaji and Agbara, but today you see checkpoints duplicated everywhere” he said
Wrong information. The number of illegal checkpoints on Seme Border road is more than 25. It is about 40 by day and 60 by night. If you want I can send you some list of the checkpoints.
I am using this opportunity to also complain of IDI IROKO axis of the border as of the last time I counted from ajilete bridge to ajegunle we have over sixty checking points comprises of all armed forces and local government tax collectors .
Name that force in Nigeria and Ogun state that is not there even the trace v.i.o are not left out.
Oga only from seme to roundabout is Abt 60, even more than that at night….
