Taiwo Mustapha: A Journey of Leadership and Commitment in ANLCA

Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha, a prominent figure in the clearing and forwarding industry, is once again vying for a seat on the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) alongside nine other candidates known as the B-9 Likeminds.

He is the immediate past Chairman of the ANLCA BoT and presently seeking re-election into office.

With a career that spans decades, Mustapha brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted commitment to the association, positioning him as a formidable candidate for this election.

Mustapha’s journey began in Port Harcourt in 1990, where he was posted to the Nigerian Customs Service for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Onne Command.

This experience allowed him to forge lasting relationships with officers who have since risen to senior positions within the service. Although initially set to join the Customs as an Assistant Superintendent, a political reshuffle altered his path, leading him into the clearing and forwarding industry.

He joined Joe Eboje as a Sea Freight Executive before establishing his own company, Pyramid Associates Limited, in 1993.

His early connections in the customs service, along with mentorship from industry stalwarts like Chief Ernest Elochukwu and Prince Olayiwola Shittu, helped solidify his standing in the business. Mustapha’s company has since handled major projects for both private and government clients, including those in the oil and gas industry.

Mustapha’s involvement with ANLCA began in earnest when he supported his former boss, Joe Eboje, during a presidential campaign within the association. Although Eboje did not win, Mustapha’s interest in ANLCA politics was reignited in 2008 when Prince Olayiwola Shittu ran for the national president position. Mustapha coordinated the Eastern Zone for Shittu’s successful campaign, which marked the beginning of his deep engagement with ANLCA.

In 2014, Mustapha took the opportunity to run for a seat on the BoT, where he was elected as the youngest and least experienced member of the board. Despite this, he was appointed coordinator, a role that saw him acting as the interim chairman for nine months. His leadership within the board and contributions to the association have earned him the respect and trust of his peers.

Reflecting on his past term, Mustapha emphasizes the importance of unity within ANLCA, particularly between the BoT and the National Executive Council (NECOM). He has expressed his unwavering support for the current national president, Emenike Nwokeoji, whom he describes as “trusted and tested.”
Mustapha believes that strong cooperation is key to advancing ANLCA’s goals and securing its future as the association approaches its 70th anniversary.

Beyond ANLCA, Mustapha has played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s maritime security landscape. As part of the presidential team for the Deep Blue Project under NIMASA and the Ministry of Transport, he worked closely with top government officials and military leaders, contributing to efforts that significantly reduced piracy and other security challenges along Nigeria’s waterways.

A firm believer in giving back to his community, Mustapha founded the Taiwo Mustapha Foundation, which focuses on education, health, and empowerment. The foundation provides scholarships to underprivileged students, assists with medical expenses, and supports small businesses.

In 2023, the foundation funded the construction of a road in his hometown of Oro, Kwara State, further demonstrating his dedication to improving the lives of those around him.

With extensive experience, a proven track record in leadership, and a passion for community service, Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha is set to continue his contributions to ANLCA’s growth and development as he seeks re-election to the BoT.
