Maritime Journalist, Hope Ovriri Wins UNILAG 3MT Competition, Research Opportunity in UK

Maritime journalist and Publisher of One Page Africa, Mrs Hope Ovriri has won the 3-Minutes Thesis (3MT) competition, a maiden edition organised by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for PhD students.
The global competition was organized by The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS), University of Lagos as part of weeklong activities to mark 2023 Nelson Mandela Week in partnership with the South African Consulate in Lagos.
Mrs Ovriri, representing the UNILAG Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) won the competition ahead of candidates from other African countries.
The 3MT initiative involves discussing a students’ entire thesis in just 3 minutes.
By winning the competition, Dr Ovriri has also clinched a fully sponsored weeklong research exchange opportunity at the University of Dundee, United Kingdom.
The competition was organised to celebrate impactful developmental research on Africa by Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students the world over.
The Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, which originated from the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, was conceived to help PhD students to develop the skills to effectively discuss their research in 3 minutes, in a language suitable to a non-specialist audience.
Mrs Ovriri demonstrated rare courage and depth of understanding of her research, titled “Utilization of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) behaviour change messages by mothers/care givers of under children in Lagos State slums”.
