2023 Polls: Nigerian Port Terminals, Dockworkers Shutdown Operations

As Nigeria goes to the polls on Saturday 25th 2023 to elect another President to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, port terminals and dockworkers are shutting down operations in order to allow workers participate in the elections.

One of the terminal operators; Five Star Logistics Terminal on Thursday announced that as a result of the upcoming Presidential elections, it’s port operations would shutdown by 3pm on Friday to resume on Sunday 26th February by 7am

In a widely circulated notice sighted by DAILY TREND, the RoRo terminal operator also announced that it’s administration activities would also not resume until Monday 27th February 2023 at 9am.

In the same vein, another terminal operator, TICT Terminal at Tin Can Island Port in a customer advisory signed by the Public Affairs Manager, Arisekola Saka announced that the terminal would be shutdown from 3pm on Friday

The notice read “RE: PRESIDENTIAL /NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS HOLDING ON FEBRUARY 25,2023

“We humbly write to inform you, due to above elections scheduled to hold on above date, Tincan Island Container terminal will be closed to business by 1500 hours of Friday 24, 2023.

“There will be no activities at the head office and all terminal operations will be shut down.

“Subject to assessment, we expect to resume gate/vessels operations on Sunday by 1930 hours of February 26 (Night shift) while head office will reopen on Monday 0800 Hours of February 27”

On the part of the workers, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in a circular dates 20th of February addressed to all it’s branches, directed them to wrote their employers and seek relieve of union members from work to enable them exercise their franchise at the elections.

The memo signed by the Deputy Secretary General, Comrade Oniha Erazua stated that “In view of the recent pronouncement of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announcing February 25th 2023 as date for election of officials into the presidency and other National political officer as reflected above;

“I am directed to inform you to please send a notice of request to all your stakeholders asking for the Relieve of Union members from work on the above stipulated date to enable them exercise their franchise”
