Apparently in preparation towards reintroduction of the revised VIN Valuation Policy of the service which is coming up later this month, the Tin Can Island Port command of the Nigeria Customs Service has announced a scheduled shutdown of it’s ICT infrastructure from Friday 6th of May through Sunday 8th of May 2022.

Close customs sources hinted DAILY TREND that the ICT upgrade
was to align the command with some of the upgrades currently going on at customs headquarters in regards to the recent positions of stakeholders as it concerns the VIN Valuation.

Recall that freight forwarders two months ago embarked on a strike action that lasted one month over the introduction of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Valuation, a customs policy that increased the price of vehicle clearance at the port by 200 percent.

The service was forced to shutdown the policy in order to accommodate concerns of the stakeholders.

The Public Relations Officer of the Tin Can Customs Command, Mr Uche Ejesieme confirmed the system upgrade to DAILY TREND on Friday morning.

He however said it was a routine maintenance and that there was nothing to worry about.

In an earlier notice, Mr Ejesieme stated that the scheduled shutdown of the ICT infrastructure is to enable the repair of some network cables in the data centre of the command.

“I am directed to notify all critical stakeholders that there would be a scheduled shutdown of NCS ICT infrastructure from 7pm Friday 6th May to 9pm Sunday May 8th 2022.
This is to enable the tidying of tbe NETWORK cables in the data centre”

“You are kindly requested to bring this to the notice of all your members” he stated in the public notice.

When our correspondent probed further on the reintroduction of the VIN Valuation, Mr Ejesieme assured that the much awaited VIN Valuation will eventually consider all the concerns of the stakeholders and that customs will never apply any punitive measure.

“Remember we had a Townhall Meeting on tbe issue and the management has promised to align with some of the positions of stakeholders.
And so the mere fact that the service is undergoing system routine maintenance does not mean that we should anticipate calamity” he stated

He stated that the VIN Valuation has certainly come to stay in line with global best practices of vehicle clearance.

“First, it would achieve uniformity in value as has been espoused and solicited by stakeholders and also for national security beyond issues of authentication of statistical data base” he assured
