The Motor Dealers Association of Nigeria (MODAN) Oyo State chapter has expressed readiness to stage a protest at the Oyo State Command Office of Nigeria Custom Service on Thursday, 3rd March, 2022 following the recent increase in duties payble on imported vehicles.

Recall that there is an ongoing freight forwarders protest at the Tin Can Island Port and PTML Terminal in Lagos which has crippled all commercial activities at both ports since Monday.

The freight forwarders were protesting against the introduction of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Valuation which was recently introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service, saying that it has increased value payable on imported vehicles by more than 300 percent.

According to a letter of Notification from MODAN, sent to the Commissioner of police, Oyo State Command, dated 25th February 2022, signed by the association’s Acting State Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahid Olawale, a copy of which was obtained by DAILY TREND NEWS, the association argued that the VIN Valuation has led to an increase in customs duty payment.

The letter reads in part “We write to formally inform you that above registered association as a result of increase in the Custom duty being introduced by the Nigerian Custom Service on every imported vehicles, which our members are in total disagreement with concerned authority, following the decision taken at our State Working Committee meeting today, we have decided to stage a peaceful protest to the Oyo State Command Office of Nigeria Custom Service on Thursday, 3rd March, 2022”
