NDLEA Converts NAHCO Office for €2m Dog Training School

Sequel to the partnership entered into with German government on the training of dogs for the use of the agency, there are indications that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has now converted its NAHCO Office at the Lagos Airport into the proposed €2m training school.

DAILY TREND NEWS gathered that the agency was encumbered by the financial implications of bringing in and maintaining the sniffer dogs.

To this effect, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) had announced in August 2021 that German authorities are building a €2m dog training school for the agency in order to further boost NDLEA’s operations.

Sources within the agency confirmed that “The cost of bringing in these dogs and maintaining them is very high, hence we are trying explore local content, and tropicalise the dogs”

“We are working with the Germans who are our counterparts.

“They have already started building a dog school in Nigeria. We have it at the NARCO office.
The construction has gone far at the NARCO office directly opposite the NARCO shed. This has been taken over for the dog school” the official who pleaded anonymity stated.

Apart from training dogs, our correspondent learnt that the NDLEA is looking at breeding dogs, even for the use of other agencies.

The dogs are going to be breed, not just for sniffling, but for other services and departments, while people are equally going to be trained on handling the dogs.

Recall that when BKA liaison officer at the German embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Jan Ritterhoff, paid the NDLEA Chairman a visit in August to discuss modalities for the project’s take off, he assured that the dog school project where more narcotic detection dogs would be deployed and groomed would be completed in phases between the next three to four years.
