Tin Can Island Port: NPA Accuses LASTMA Of Lacking Towing Vehicles

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has accused the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) of lacking equipment, especially towing vehicles to control the menace of articulated trucks parking around the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.

Speaking with DAILY TREND NEWS, Port Manager of Tin Can Island Port, Eng Yunusa Anji said the LASTMA only focus its attention on the Ijora and Apapa axis in terms of road sanitisation, while abandoning Tin Can Port axis.

Eng Anji stated that it is through his personal efforts and combined efforts of Tin Can Port officials that the port axis has been free of traffic congestion in recent time.

According to him “The traffic on the expressway is being caused by the artificial people parking their trucks there, the Lagos State Government are supposed to control it in terms of LASTMA, they supposed to tow away these illegal trucks parking on the expressway and waiting for jobs”

“But LASTMA is not even helping us because they don’t have enough towing vehicles

“From my experience, LASTMA do not have enough towing vehicles, since I came in here, I have not seen any LASTMA towing vehicle along Tin Can Island Port axis, they might be at Mile 2, but not along first gate or second gate of Tin Can Port.

“They concentrate their attention on Ijora and Apapa, but I don’t care, I am using all the little power I have, and my officers on their toes to make sure that we don’t have congestion like before and it would never come back.

“It is everybody’s effort that the road is free. It is to the benefit of the truckers if the road is free, because they would be able to do more trips

“Right now, where we are having problems is at Mile 2 axis and Otto Wharf, we are still discussing with the contractor in charge of the road construction to finish up so that Tin Can would be free from complaints” Anji stated
