Even as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is set to flag off the implementation of electronic call-up system for trucks accessing Nigerian ports, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called for speedy completion of the Mile 2-Tin Can Island Port road along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju noted that for the NPA electronic call-up to be successful, this critical access to the port has to be completed.

Comrade Adeyanju has also assured that his second term in office would further ensure peace and tranquility in the Nigerian port system.

He reinstated the Union’s support for NPA over the electronic call-up system also known as ETO, and stressed the need for all truck owners and associations to key into the ETO Application and make use of the designated truck parks identified by NPA.

The unionist lamented the slow pace of work along Tin Can Port road by the contracting firm, Hitech Construction Company, calling on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to prevail on the contractor to expedite action on the road project.

“We are all aware of what is happening along the Tin Can road. The contractors are very slow in handling that project. If the NPA e-call up system for trucks will be successful, they must ensure they expedite action on the road on time so that they can put it to use for all the trucks and stakeholders.

“The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing will need to talk to Hitech, the work they are doing is very slow,” he said.

While urging stakeholders to support the NPA e-call up, Adeyanju said it would help reduce human interference and address the indiscriminate parking of trucks along the port access roads.

He said, “We have already supported the idea of the e-call up system. It is going to be for the benefit of all the stakeholders and reduce human interference on the road. Let us give it a trial and let us see how it is going to work. I believe NPA has sensitized all the stakeholders including the union and they have given us assurance so let us see how it is going to work.”

Speaking earlier while receiving members of the union from outports (eastern ports) the MWUN President General vowed that never again would Nigerian dockworkers be used as thugs for Nigerian politicians.

Recall that all the four branches of the union had unanimously endorsed Adeyanju for another tenure of 4years in office, a feat that has never been recorded in the past 40years of the union.

While addressing the members who had come to show more solidarity support and pledge allegiance, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju assured that he was going to use his second term to reposition the four branches of the union for better performance.

He said: “My second term will be more peaceful, will create more employment, there won’t be crisis, never a ain in the history of MWUN will the doc workers be used as thugs, we know what the union is known for in the past, when coming here then was a difficult thing, and how we used to receive invitation from the Police, State Security Service (SSS) EFCC and others, but today we have not recorded anything like that we know how this place used to look like before”

“For the past 40 years, what we are witnessing today has never happened, where all the four branches come together to support and ive their continuity mandate, this ind of gesture has never happened where all the four branches come together to support and give their mandate, this kind of gesture given to me had never happened”

”I want to thank everyone of you for the support and i appreciate you, good things are coming for this great union, the dock workers cannot be used as slave in their father’s land

Also speaking at the endorsement ceremony, Sunday Osho, who was a popular opposition to the MWUN boss, declared his support, while describing the MWUN PG as a man with a good heart, he stated that although he was an opposition and was working against the government of the PG initially, he said that the overwhelming love of the PG has proven him to be a good man.

Also speaking, Micheal Ubogu, the Managing Director of Micura Stevedoring Services described Adeyanju as a good leader who embraced both friends and family, while also givin his solidarity for the second term re-election.

Tunde Bolaji, who spoke on behalf of the District Chairmen from the Eastern ports, said, “Our coming from Port Harcourt is to declare our total support and loyalty for our President General’s second tenure that we are solidly behind him. We don’t always call him PG but we call him father because of the way he relates with us.”
