Gowon, Amaechi, Others Billed To Speak As CIOTA Holds 2020 National Transport Summit

The President, Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh who is the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said that all is set for the second National Transport Summit and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the institute, which is slated for Abuja between December 1 and 3, 2020.

Speaking at a press conference in Apapa yesterday, Jamoh said the event would be chaired by Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.)

Three key Ministers; Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, Minister of Aviation, Mr. Hadi Sirika, Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, are also attending the conference to avail a holistic approach to resolving the numerous challenges plaguing the nation’s transport sector.

The theme of the summit is Building Sustainable Transport Infrastructure in Nigeria: Opportunities, Innovations and Technologies.

CIOTA President Jamoh said ‘’this second summit seeks to build on the gains of the maiden edition held exactly one year ago in Abuja as CIOTA takes her place as the foremost and exclusive charter body designated by legislation to drive the Nigerian transportation sector. It is expected that it will contribute to our having enduring/sustainable transport infrastructure, address issues relating to funding/development of the four modes (of transport), not in silos but together as each mode is connected to other; while also exploring new partnership concepts and making a case for private participation in the railway.’’

Backgrounding the summit, Jamoh said ‘’the rebuilding of Nigeria’s transport infrastructure is currently in progress as the rail network, highways and bridges, deep seaports, airports concession are some of the areas of strategic focus. The building of inland ports represents a hybrid innovation and technology for extending the hinterland of ports, providing opportunities for multimodal in the use of rail, road transport, and short sea shipping. However, there are enormous challenges in the efforts. These include funding, public-private partnership arrangements, institution building, and the COVID-19 issues which have increased the risks of transportation globally.

‘’The summit will address the many facts of these outlines issues, using the expertise and rich industrial experience of the speakers, discussants, and active audience participation.’’

He said the summit will comply in full with all the preventive measures designed by the Federal Government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other Guests of Honour expected at the summit include; the Director-General of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu; Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala-Usman; Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Mr. Hassan Bello; the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Engr. Fidet Okhiria.

Others are; Managing Director, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Nuruddeen Abdurrahman Raffindadi; Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, Comrade Emmanuel Duja Effedua; Director General, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) Zaria, Dr. Salih Farah Bayero and the Corps Marshall, Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi.
