NIMASA Curtails Oil Spill From Capsized Vessel; NV LAIDA
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has demonstrated its commitment to implementing the International Maritime Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC) establishing measures for dealing with marine oil pollution incidents nationally and in co-operation with other countries.
The agency said it has proved its preparedness to respond to oil pollution incidents on Nigerian waterways with an ill fated vessel; NV LAIDA which capsized recently.
Though the agency did not specify the location of the incident, it however said that when the incident occured, “NIMASA successfully curtailed the oil spill by deploying boom around the area and began investigations on the situation”
In a short tweet on the agency’s twitter handle; @nimasaofficial on Sunday, it says “The Agency’s contingency plan is derived from the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation”
As of November 2018, there are 112 state parties to the convention.
OPRC Convention was drafted within the framework of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and adopted in 1990 entering into force in 1995.
In accordance with this Convention and its Annex, States-Parties to the 1990 Convention undertake, individually or jointly, to take all appropriate measures to prepare for and respond to oil pollution incidents.
