BREAKING: Maritime Workers Down Tools At TICT Terminal Over Poor Salary
Commercial activities at the Tin Can Island Port on Tuesday morning have been paralysed as members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) downed tools at the Tin Can Island Container Terminal (TICT) Lagos.
DAILY TREND NEWS gathered exclusively that the workers under the Shipping Branch on Tuesday morning called out their members on protest against the management of TICT Terminal over poor remuneration and refusal of the terminal to implement a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
Subsequently, the terminal gates has been locked and operations has been stopped in the Terminal.
Our correspondent learnt that the workers have also refused to listen to the unit heads of the MWUN, insisting that the management of TICT should address them directly.
Efforts by our correspondent to speak with TICT management proved abortive as at time of filing this report.
However, when he was contacted, President of the Shipping Branch of MWUN, Comrade Ekpeyong Ekpeyong confirmed the development.
Speaking, Ekpeyong said “The issue is about the CBA negotiations which the union have been discussing with the management. Other terminals have implemented their own except TICT, we have been on the matter for a long time”
“We were supposed to meet yesterday and resume talks but we later shifted it to a later date next week. The workers were not happy about this so they stopped work this morning”
The unionist assured that the management of the union are already in talks with TICT management to ensure workers return to work.
