WIMAfrica Visits Alaafin of Oyo, As Monarch Calls for More Women in Maritime

The Nigerian Chapter of Women in Maritime Africa (WIMAfrica) led by the National Financial Secretary of Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Hajia Bola Muse yesterday visited the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, even as the monarch has encouraged more women to take profession in the maritime sector.

He urged women already practicing  in the maritime sector to engage in robust awareness creation capable of making more women to join the sector.

The Oyo monarch said that women as builders had crucial roles to play in the growth and stability of the economy.

“With the roles and inputs of women, the maritime sector will record greater growth, and will be positioned for greater impact.

“I advise WIMAfrica to create more awareness to lead more women into the industry and to play front-line roles in growing the economy,” he said.

Speaking earlier, WIMAfrica’s President, Hajia Bola Muse, said the association provided a platform for training, capacity building, corporate and entrepreneurial development of African women in the maritime sector.

She said that the association was willing to partner traditional institutions to enable more women participation in its activities.

“WIMAfrica Nigeria is a chapter of WIMAfrica, which adopted the Maritime Strategy 2050 to contribute to the building of Africa’s Blue Economy.

“Between 2017 and 2018, we have formally registered the association and got recognized by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the National Assembly and other national bodies,” she said.

Muse added that the association had undertaken some empowerment programmes including the donation of fish processing and preservation equipment to women in Makoko fishing community in Lagos.
