Shippers Council: Dr Akutah Receives MARAN Excos, Appreciates Association’s Strategic Role in Blue Economy Growth
The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, has called on maritime journalists to uphold the highest standards of ethics, accuracy and professionalism in reporting, describing responsible journalism as a critical pillar for the sustainable growth and development of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
Dr. Akutah made the call when the newly inaugurated executives of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), led by its President, Mr. Yinka Onigbinde, paid a courtesy visit to the Council’s Headquarters in Lagos.
Welcoming the delegation, the NSC boss commended MARAN for its longstanding contribution to the dissemination of credible information on developments within the maritime sector, noting that the media remains an indispensable partner in promoting transparency, accountability and public understanding of government policies and reforms.
“The Council is delighted to receive you at our Headquarters. I sincerely appreciate the cordial relationship and partnership we have built over the years. Your contributions as maritime journalists are highly commendable,” Dr. Akutah said.
He noted that beyond reporting events, journalists play a strategic role in educating the public, shaping informed discourse and serving as watchdogs that strengthen institutions and promote industry best practices.
The NSC Chief Executive urged members of the association to remain committed to truth, fairness and factual reporting while avoiding misinformation and safeguarding the confidentiality of credible sources. According to him, ethical journalism is essential for building confidence among stakeholders and supporting reforms aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Nigeria’s ports and the maritime sector.
Dr. Akutah also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, describing the initiative as a landmark policy decision that has provided strategic direction for the sector, attracted growing investor interest and positioned the maritime industry as a key contributor to national economic development.
He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the media in driving awareness of ongoing reforms and initiatives aimed at improving port efficiency, enhancing the ease of doing business and maximising the sector’s contribution to the nation’s economy.
“Your continued support has been invaluable to the growth of the maritime industry. We look forward to strengthening this partnership to achieve even greater results for the industry and for Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
Earlier, the President of MARAN, Mr. Yinka Onigbinde, commended the Council’s boss for his leadership in advancing reforms within the maritime sector.
He assured the NSC of MARAN’s continued commitment to responsible, balanced and development-oriented journalism, while expressing the association’s readiness to collaborate with the Council in promoting policies and initiatives that will further strengthen Nigeria’s maritime industry.
