The Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Apapa chapter, Chief Emeka Chukwumalu, has been conferred with the prestigious award of Most Impactful Freight Icon of the Year.

The honour was bestowed at the 2026 Conference and Awards of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), held in Lagos on Thursday.

The award was presented by renowned maritime legal practitioner, Mrs. Chiazor Jean-Anishere (SAN), on behalf of the association.

Chief Chukwumalu, a frontline Customs broker, has made significant contributions to freight forwarding practice. In his remarks at the event, he identified ineffective truck transit arrangements as a major challenge at the port, even as he urged the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to take decisive action.

He specifically called for the merger of the Terminal Delivery Order (TDO) with the ETO Call-Up system, stressing that such integration would prevent trucks without containers from congesting Apapa and Tin Can access roads.

He further emphasized the need for urgent reforms to make Nigerian ports more competitive.

According to him, Nigerian ports remain the most expensive in West and Central Africa, a situation that discourages business. He advocated for measures that would reduce costs and enhance efficiency, thereby attracting more cargo traffic.

Reacting to the award, Chukwumalu expressed gratitude to AMJON for recognizing his contributions to the maritime and freight forwarding sectors. He noted that the honour would inspire him to intensify efforts in the industry.
