AMATO Commends Customs CG Adeniyi, FOU Ikeja Compt Shuaibu for Protecting Truckers Against Unwarranted Arrests

The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) has extended its profound commendation to the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and the Customs Area Controller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU Zone A) Ikeja, Compt Mohammed Shuaibu for their timely intervention in safeguarding maritime truckers from the unfair treatment resulting from false declarations by unscrupulous importers and their collaborators.

In a signed press release, President of AMATO, Chief Remi Ogungbemi stated that for several years, maritime truckers have endured severe hardships, including unwarranted arrests and prolonged impoundment of trucks, arising from fraudulent cargo declarations made by importers.

According to him, truckers, whose sole responsibility is the lawful transportation of duly cleared containers from the ports, were often made scapegoats for offences they knew nothing about.

“This unfortunate practice had plunged many hardworking truck owners, drivers, and their families into untold economic and emotional distress.

“We therefore sincerely commend the CGC for his visionary leadership, fairness, and unwavering commitment to justice. AMATO pledges its continued cooperation and support as the Service pursues reforms that will further strengthen trade facilitation, compliance, and efficiency in the maritime sector” Ogungbemi said
