The President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Francis Bunu has set Friday 30th of January for conclusion of the district elections into the dockworkers branch of the union.

This is coming after controversies peaked in Octotber 2025, when a group identified as Dockworkers Justice Forum dragged the union to the Industrial Court, alleging that the President General was meddling in the electoral procedure and trying to impose candidates.
However, at a meeting held with leaders of the dockworkers branch in Lagos on Wednesday, Comrade Bunu announced that the election would be concluded on Friday.
Apparently, the union has reached consensus on its choice of district chairmen, as the President General formally announced the ten Chairmen of the district and unveiled them to the members.

“Why i called this meeting is to inform you that on Friday is your remaining district elections, as the date has been fixed, nothing shall go beyond that very day, 10am is the time, so if you know that you are a member of MWUN and part of the district, Friday is the day that you wear your good clothes, dress very well and be there.

“I have seen that the most peaceful people are the dockworkers” he said

He commended the President of Dockworkers Branch, Comrade Bolaji Agboola for taking care of Dockworkers who are currently not having engagements or employments and giving them a sense of belonging.

“This has shown that you are your brother’s keeper and you don’t want anyone to suffer. I would want us all to imbibe that spirit and not just the spirit of winner takes it all” he said

He described the district as the most critical part of the union where many things happen and people are made millionaires overnight.
He further urged the district chairmen to ensure that everyone under their watch are well taken care of. He further urged them not to entertain side talks and gossips in their office.

“You must carry everyone along in your various districts, both the good and the bad, thats the same thing that I did, every Dockworker supported me, so i am the father of all. In the same manner, if you have the mindset of eating it all alone, please leave it in your house, be your brother’s keeper so that the vessel can sail smoothly” he charged, while unveiling the leaders.
