ANLCA Western Zone Coordinator Hails CGC Adeniyi’s Historic Election as WCO Council Chairperson

The Western Zone Coordinator of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Alhaji Femi Anifowose, has extended congratulations on behalf of all ANLCA members in the zone, to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, on his unanimous election as the Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council.
The election took place during the concluding session of the 145th/146th WCO Council Meetings held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels.
In a statement released on Sunday 29th June 2025, Alhaji Anifowose described CGC Adeniyi’s emergence as a momentous achievement not only for the Comptroller-General personally but also for the Nigeria Customs Service, the nation, and the entire African Customs community.
“This historic milestone, being the first Nigerian to hold this prestigious office since the WCO’s establishment, is a clear testament to CGC Adeniyi’s exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and the transformative agenda he has vigorously pursued over the past two years as Comptroller-General,” Alhaji Anifowose stated.
The ANLCA Western Zone Coordinator highlighted CGC Adeniyi’s commitment to upholding the core values of the WCO, promoting innovation, equity, and deeper collaboration among member states, as attributes that deeply resonate with the association’s aspirations for a more efficient and globally integrated customs environment.
“We are particularly encouraged by his pledge to support the WCO’s ongoing modernization efforts and implement its 2025-2028 strategic plan, recognizing the critical role customs plays in navigating the complex realities of global trade.”
Alhaji Anifowose further noted the symbolic lowering of the South African flag and the hoisting of the Nigerian flag at the WCO headquarters, describing it as a powerful and proud moment for all Nigerians.
He expressed confidence that under CGC Adeniyi’s chairmanship, Nigeria is strategically positioned to drive crucial customs reform conversations across the Global South, particularly in areas like AfCFTA implementation, illicit trade suppression, and technology adoption.
