LASTCOC Rallies NPA, LASTMA, Others, Holds Safety Awareness Program to Curb Truck Accidents in Lagos

The Lagos State Trucks and Cargo Operators Committee (LASTCOC) took a proactive step to address the concerning rate of accidents involving containerized trucks in Lagos State by organizing a crucial safety awareness program on Thursday.
The event, held at the Lillypond Truck Park in Ijora, brought together truck owners and drivers for vital discussions and sensitization on road safety regulations.
Representing the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Engineer Adesanya A O, the AGM for Safety at the NPA, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the critical role of safety in the transport and logistics industry.
He acknowledged the dedication of truck drivers and owners, stating,
“Without your dedication, businesses would not thrive, markets would not be supplied, and economies would not grow. But today, I want to remind us all that the foundation of a successful business and a thriving industry is safety.”
Engineer Adesanya underscored the importance of adhering to safety rules, highlighting the theme of the program: “To stay alive, to remain in business, and to prevent accidents, obey safety rules and regulations. Safety: Your Ticket to Staying Alive and Thriving.”
He stressed that road accidents have devastating real-world consequences for families, businesses, and communities, urging drivers and owners to recognize the life-altering choices made each time a truck embarks on a journey.
He specifically pointed out that speeding, reckless driving, and neglecting vehicle maintenance are major contributors to accidents. “A well-maintained truck, a well-rested driver, and strict adherence to safety protocols can be the difference between life and death,” he asserted, reminding attendees that “no trip is more important than your life!”
The NPA representative also emphasized the need for continuous sensitization and enlightenment campaigns, advocating for regular safety workshops, refresher courses, and interactive forums across truck parks and companies in Lagos State.
He envisioned a future where safety is ingrained as a fundamental practice within the industry.
Alhaji Lukman Shittu Zangalo, the State Chairman of LASTCOC, echoed these sentiments, imploring truck owners and drivers to prioritize the roadworthiness of their vehicles by complying with minimum safety standards.
He also called for their cooperation with road traffic control agencies to minimize accidents on Lagos highways.
The event witnessed the presence of key stakeholders, including Mr. Tiamiyu Oluwatosin, Assistant Director in the Ministry of Transportation, and Eng Okunlaja Temitope, representing the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS).
Representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos State Command, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also graced the occasion.
Collectively, these representatives delivered a strong message, urging truck owners and drivers to comply strictly with road safety regulations. This includes ensuring trucks are roadworthy with valid documentation, employing qualified drivers with valid licenses, avoiding substance abuse, and conducting routine mechanical check-ups before commencing any journey.
The primary objective of this safety compliance program is to drastically reduce the alarming frequency of accidents involving containerized trucks in Lagos State, ultimately making the roads safer for all users.
