Nigerian Seafarers are now Among the Highest Paid, MWUN tells Visiting ITF Coordinator

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has disclosed that Nigerian seafarers are now among the highest paid in the world, adding that this is one of the major benefits of the Maritime Affiliate Support (MAS project) initiative of the International Transport Federation (ITF)
This was stated during a working visit of the Coordinator of ITF, Barning Annica Marie to the headquarters of the union in Lagos on Monday.
Marie announced that the Maritime Affiliate Support project for Nigerian seafarers, has been recording progress and that most companies in the sector are now complying with global best practices towards enhancing decent work.
She said “The membership is increasing, there is an increase in ITF agreements, what we have to work on now is the accreditation of certificates for Nigerian seafarers and this is ongoing.
Everybody is happy with the job you (MWUN) are doing here and I am so happy to have just a small cut of this success”
The leadership of the workers union at the event took turns to highlight how members are benefiting from the Maritime Affiliate Support project.
President-General of the Union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju spoke on training and retraining of workers, as well as global employment opportunities that members have benefited due to the MAS Project.
DAILY TREND reports that before the commencement of the Maritime Affiliate Support project, reports indicated that there was a shortfall in the number of Nigerian seafarers globally.
Speaking, Comrade Adeyanju said “The MAS Project is a maritime affiliate project that involves ITF and the seafarers branch of MWUN, since its inception, we have had a lot of understanding with our employers of seafarers, especially in the Collective Bargaining Agreements for seafarers both locally and internationally”
Also speaking, President of Seafarers Branch of MWUN, Comrade Sunday Avose confirmed that the idea of the MAS Project was to allow ITF support workers in Nigeria so that they can get good packages from their employers.
“I can tell you for free that today, Nigerian seafarers are one of the highest paid by the last CBA we signed with the ship management of NLNG, the CBA happens to be the highest” he said

I have worked with different Nationalities and I will tell you with facts that Nigerian Seafarers are the least paid Seafarers I have worked with. No good welfare, expensive courses and renewals, & marginalisation.
I don’t know where MWUN derive their data from.
I am a certified Seafarer and I can tell you for free that this is a big lie from the pit of hell. As a matter of fact we are the worst paid seafarers in the world even in our own country where foreigners are paid in thousands of dollars under the pretense of expatriates, and the Nigerians of same rank doing same job are paid far less than their foreign counterparts . The only thing I can say about Nigerian Management is the issue of mental slavery, where a Nigerian manager believes a foreigner should always be paid higher than a fellow Nigerian of same rank, all for the sake of skin color.
I don’t know where these people have gotten their data. In fact they have told big lie. Nigerian seafarers are the least pay in the wold. Please don’t take their word for it.
Lol, Lets finds out before criticizing him, Probably the MWUN President, Comrade Adeyanju Meant to say Nigerian Seafarers are the worst paid Seafarers in the World occasioned by mental Slavery, Apartheid, intimidation, Suppression lack of Job Satisfaction and Job Security.
